Last weekend DuiLan, Millie McCabe, Polly Delay and Sanjana Kodishala (pictured) participated in the PhilSpeaks Mace, again in Trinity. But that is not all, as we have the L&H mace on the 25^th聽鈥� so watch this space for more information on our great debating clubs.

Each year, over a thousand students are invited to participate, and last year had over 350 schools competing. The competition offers students an excellent chance to develop their skills and confidence in public speaking, thoughtful argumentation and analytical problem solving, and is open to students of all ages.

The best performing teams in the competition compete in Finals Day, held at the historic Oxford Union. The Union is one of the most prestigious debating societies in the world, with an unparalleled reputation for hosting renowned speakers from around the globe. Established 200 years ago, the society has a long tradition of challenging thought and aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but around the world.

The event went brilliantly and we were delighted to see two of our students, DuiLan Sun and Millie McCabe (both 5^th), qualified for Finals Day (March 11^th 2023), held in the historic Oxford University.

We look forward to following their progress and seeing how they fair while debating in Oxford Union this March.

Congratulations to Edward de Bono. Edward was awarded with Distinguished Delegate for his incredible contribution to the debate in the Royal Russell鈥檚 Crisis Committee.

The committee is convened at short notice in response to a surprise event. The students had only an evening to prepare and research before launching into a day of discussion and resolution writing.

Best of luck to Edward DeBono, Faye McGarry, Emily-Faye Xantho and Udaiveer Parihar (pictured left to right) who are headed to Croydon for The Royal Russell Model United Nations. It is the first time we have attended this prestigious event.

Royal Russell School (UK) hosts an annual four-day International Model United Nations Conference each October. Royal Russell School was the first British school to set up an annual MUN conference and this year is the 40^th听础苍苍颈惫别谤蝉补谤测.

Mace debating involves rapid preparations for the debate, with only 15 minutes to brainstorm ideas between the motion being announced and speeches starting. Unable to access online resources or research around the topic, the students need to focus on the fundamental elements of an argument: motive, agents, outcomes etc.

The school had three delegations this year: India, Chile and Colombia. Students represent their countries across a variety of committees that cover issues ranging from ecology to human rights and international security. Students must research their country to gain insight into their particular stances on pressing issues.

The three teams representing The 91制片厂 were comprised of 4th and 5th year students:

IOE 1: Yolanda Zhao (5^th Year), Dui-Lan Sun (4^th Year)
IOE 2: Sofia Keating-McCabe (5^th Year), Zoe Morris (5^th听驰别补谤)
IOE 3: Edward DeBono (5^th Year), Lucy Cronnelly (5^th Year)

For the Irish regional round, the teams debated in a Mace format. This meant that they had only 15 minutes to prepare their approach to the topic they had received on the day. The two motions debated on the day were:

Round 1: This House prefers a world where, after COVID-19 is no longer a threat to public health and safety, working from home remains the norm.
Round 2: This House believes that liberal democracies should boycott major sporting events hosted by countries with known human rights abuses.

It is fascinating and commendable that our students are debating and helping to shift attitudes to current world events and issues, including the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s great to see our students excelling in debating and developing a vital skill set.

The great news is that one of the teams representing The 91制片厂, IOE 3, were declared one of the winning teams at the event. As a result of this they will progress to debating in Oxford Union in the UK this March. We look forward to following their progress and seeing how they fair while debating in Oxford Union this March.

The event took place on the 7^th, 8^th and 9^th of May. we spoke to some of the students who took part and this is what they had to say about the event

“I found the overall experience interesting and in particular the cooperation between delegates was engaging. I would go next year if it鈥檚 on.鈥� – Edward DeBono, 4th Year.

鈥淚 found SAIMUN to be very interesting and I really enjoyed it!聽 I particularly enjoyed the lobbying of the different topics and the crisis debate, where I got to know some of the other delegates better and their relevant countries鈥� views on Iran etc. I would definitely go to any other Model UN conferences next year.
