Our Out of School course is perfect for 5th Year students who want to study Politics & Society independently for the Leaving Certificate exams in 2028. Students attend classes over 2 years, to ensure that they have the very best preparation for their assessed project and the Leaving Certificate Exam.

Over 29 weeks, our expert teachers will guide you through the course, helping you build solid subject knowledge and develop the exam skill you need to do your best.

Classes are two hours and are delivered fully online – so you can learn from the comfort of home, stay on track, and get all the support you need.

Coursework information

A project is 20% of the final Leaving Certificate examination grade. The preparation for the project commences late in the first term of the second year of classes (Academic year 2027/28). Students will be guided through the project. Some classwork time will be dedicated to this, both for general instruction and for student questions, there will also be a number of onsite workshops to support students preparing for their projects, these occasional workshops are scheduled on weekends, in consultation with the attending students.

 

Assessment

Homework is assigned and graded on a regular basis, with graded feedback provided.

End-of-topic assessments are regularly scheduled. Student progress is closely monitored to ensure ongoing skill development is progressing at the appropriate rate.

A Christmas assessment and Summer report will be issued.

Q: How do I access my online classes?

A: Students enrolled on the course will receive an email from us containing their unique login details and links to access their chosen subjects. Login credentials will be sent in advance of course start date. Only those details sent to you will enable you to successfully access classes online.

 

Q: How are the online classes hosted?

´¡:ÌýAll online classes are hosted live on Microsoft Teams. The links to the weekly classes are accessed via Moodle. Students must sign into both Moodle and MS Teams with the @instituteofeducation.ie login credentials sent to the student.

 

Q: Are the online classes pre-recorded?

A: No, each online class is streamed live. Recordings of classes will be available after each live class is completed. These can then be replayed as a revision aid.

A: Yes. A soft copy is available on the Moodle Course page for each class booked. Class notes will be posted directly to you. Please ensure you include your Eircode when registering to ensure notes are posted to the correct location.

A: Our classes run in a more lecture style than most students might be used to in school, but they are also interactive, and teachers will use a variety of methods to ensure that students can learn and understand and feel comfortable asking questions and contributing to the class.

 

Q: For weekly classes, does the beginning of a new term mean the start of a new course?

A: No, in the weekly classes each subject commences in September and runs through to the end of the academic year in May. Students can catch up on what they have missed by reviewing the previous class recordings and notes.

 

Q: If I want to join weekly classes during the year, can I find out what is yet to be covered on the course and what I have missed?

A: Each teacher has their own individual teaching plan for the year and will be able to advise on this.

Coursework Information

The project in Agricultural Science is worth 25%.

It involves completing the Individual Investigative Study (IIS) and preparing a portfolio of all mandatory experiments completed. It is based on a brief (title & theme) that the State Examinations Commission release every year. Students are expected to engage in research around this years theme and develop their own research question on which they will base their project on.ÌýTo answer their research question, students will have to carry out one or more physical experiments and collect data. Based on the data collected and the research completed, students will complete a 2,500 word report on their findings. Students must be able to work independently on their projects and if possible to carry out some of the experimental work at home or on a farm. Engaging with teachers / school staff, taking photos of the experiment, documenting results and oversight by teachers / school staff authenticates the project as the students own work.

The Applied Maths syllabus covers a variety of topics, designed to solve problems arising in physics, computer science, business and finance. This course explores each topic in turn by first explaining the ideas behind, and motivation for the topic at hand, as well as applications to further study and professions. More concrete problems are then tackled, and once a level of proficiency and understanding is achieved focus is shifted to exam papers.

Coursework information

A project is 20% of the final Leaving Certificate examination grade. The preparation for the project commences late in the first term of the second year of classes (Academic year 2027/28). Students will be guided through the project. Some classwork time will be dedicated to this, both for general instruction and for student questions, there will also be a number of onsite workshops to support students preparing for their projects, these occasional workshops are scheduled on weekends, in consultation with the attending students.

 

Assessment

Homework is assigned and graded on a regular basis, with graded feedback provided.

End-of-topic assessments are regularly scheduled. Student progress is closely monitored to ensure ongoing skill development is progressing at the appropriate rate.

A Christmas assessment and Summer report will be issued.

End-of-topic assessments are regularly scheduled. Student progress is closely monitored to ensure ongoing skill development is progressing at the appropriate rate.

A Christmas assessment and Summer report will be issued.

A project is 20% of the final Leaving Certificate examination grade. The preparation for the project commences late in the first term of the second year of classes (Academic year 2027/28). Get ahead in Leaving Certificate Irish with our dedicated Summer Irish Oral Course.

This Course is designed specifically to prepare Leaving Certificate students for the Irish Oral exam.

With a limited number of places, the focus of this course is firmly on student participation and engagement with spoken Irish, ensuring every student gets the individual attention and practice time they need.

The Irish Oral exam is worth 40% of a student’s overall Leaving Cert grade in Irish and many students experience significant pressure to perform exceptionally well in this.

This Summer Irish Oral preparation course will help students achieve their potential and boost their confidence.

Students will also receive a full set of comprehensive notes, which will include sample answers covering all aspects of the Irish Oral Exam from the Introduction, to the Poetry Reading, to the Conversation and the Picture Sequences.

We will also look at the layout of the exam, pronunciation in Irish, strategy, tips and techniques as well as advice on the most optimal way to prepare and study for this 40% exam and achieve the highest possible grade.

Our 2-week intensive Summer Language Courses are designed to help students entering 5th and 6th year improve their French, German & Spanish language skills. Our experienced and skilled teachers deliver these courses in the immersive classroom environment where students can improve oral and written fluency, expression, and comprehension in the Senior Cycle curriculum.

This intensive course is deigned to develop and strengthen the four key language skills – speaking, listening, reading and writing – with a strong focus on examination preparation and performance.
Topics include:
  • Grammar: We will cover the core grammatical structures needed to communicate confidently, including determiners, prepositions, adjectives, pronouns and tenses.
  • ReadingÌý Comprehensions:ÌýWe will work on past papers, study examination techniques, and build up vocabulary for this section. Both journalistic and literary passages will be studied.
  • Listening Comprehension: With daily practice with past papers, we will study key vocabulary needed for this section.
  • Written Production: We will study opinion pieces, narrative stories, diary entries and emails, looking at past questions and studying sample answers. Students will learn how to structure a written piece and maximise their marks. Comprehensive notes will be provided for the major abstract topics.
  • Oral Preparation: WeÌýwill look at all aspects of the interview, including French pronunciation, vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. Detailed notes will be provided on all oral topics.

This German Language course will develop and reinforce the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while concentrating on the skills and Grammar required for the Leaving Certificate Exam.

  • Journalistic and literary Reading comprehension practice with in-depth concentration on answering skills and techniques for the exam paper.
  • Leaving Certificate German Oral format and marking scheme will be covered in detail including some roleplays and pictures sequences

The 91ÖÆƬ³§ Summer English Academy is an intensive 5-day course designed to provide 6th Year students with the confidence and skills to succeed in Higher Level English.

This course aims to focus on one key aspect of the LC English course per day, concentrating on the key components of the marking scheme, and illustrating how students can adopt specific revision and writing techniques to improve the quality of their exam answers.

Covering key topics on the syllabus, our English Academy will ensure students are prepared for the challenges of Higher-Level English in Senior Cycle so they can hit the ground running in September.

This course will be delivered onsite at our Leeson Street Campus in Dublin.

Course Content

This course breaks down the structure of the exam paper into discrete bundles – recognising what is unique to each question and writing task, and identifying areas of continuity, where clear analytic and writing skills can be developed across the papers as a whole. By the end of the course, students will have been introduced to many new concepts, terminology, and structures/styles of writing. The goal throughout is to have students better prepared to engage with their Senior Cycle English Programme in September, and provide a clear roadmap for improvement in upcoming Christmas and Mock examinations.

 

The material covered each day will be as follows:

Day 1 –ÌýIntroduction to ‘Discursive Essay’ – The underlying structure of all LC Questions is developing a meaningful and engaging writing style that focuses in on concept and writing development. This session focuses on converting content knowledge into meaningful exam plans and responses. We will also scaffold how to plan your long-term development as a LC English student with clear measurement and tracking activities. Understanding the ‘P, L, M, C’ marking scheme will also be a key feature of this process.

Day 2 –ÌýSpeechwriting and DebatesÌýAcross Paper 1 – Introduction to the ‘Language of Persuasion’. Planning and executing LC Speeches with rhetorical flair. Structure and responses to Leaving Certificate Paper 1. Comprehensions that deal with multiple forms of oratoryÌýand rhetorical devices.

Day 3 –ÌýIntro to Unseen & Studied Poetry – Developing a methodological approach to poetry responses. Focusing in onÌýselected poems of Emily Dickinson.

Day 4 –ÌýSingle Text Study – Introduction to Shakespeare – Key principles in engaging critically with Shakespearean language and theatrical conventions.ÌýUnderstanding the role of the Tragic Hero. Writing about Theme and Character in LC answers.

Day 5 –ÌýIntro to Comparative Questions – Key requirement of ‘modes’ of study. Cultural Context &ÌýGeneral Vision and Viewpoint (focusing on the texts The Shawshank Redemption and Small Things Like These) – Unique answer structures of the 30 and 40-mark questions, compared with the 70-mark essay structure.

This course will revise aspects of the Junior Cycle course and bridge the gap to Senior Cycle content. Each session will start by reviewing material the students have previously covered and then build up, until they are working on Leaving Certificate Higher Level material. By the end of the course, the students will have met many new concepts and be well prepared for starting into their Senior Cycle Maths Programme in September.
