Our 4th Year students get the opportunity to get hands on barista training from Dublin Barista School. Dublin Barista School brought in state of the art equipment and their best baristas to help train each of our 4th years on the art of coffee making. It is just one of the many optional extra-curricular activities available throughout the year as part of our 4th Year programme.

Here you can see some photos of the students learning about and making coffee under the expert guidance of the Dublin Barista School baristas.

This week,听 4th year students Selin Palanduz, Alex Brady and Clara Donaghy had the opportunity to experience what it鈥檚 like to study medicine and work as a doctor as part of theRCSI Transition Year MiniMed programme. We sat down with Clara to hear about her experience at the MiniMed week:

鈥淥verall it was a great experience. We got a really good insight into the Medical profession. It wasn鈥檛 just lectures and conversations, we watched a live C-section and got to see the simulation rooms. The mock surgery room and mock A&E room were amazing. They also have patient dummies that are very realistic, they actually talk which was really cool. They showed us how x-ray works and taught us how to tell if a bone is broken. Then we used plaster of Paris to make casts for each other鈥檚 arms which was really fun.

I had always considered studying medicine but wasn鈥檛 100% certain. However, after spending time in the RCSI, it鈥檚 definitely on the cards! I would definitely recommend the MiniMed programme to anyone thinking of studying medicine and I know the other students on the programme would too!鈥 – Clara Donaghy, 4th year

Patrick Purfield, 4th Year and legal enthusiast has just returned from completing his work experience on the Bar of Ireland ‘Look Into Law’ Transition Year Programme. This week-long programme is aimed at introducing students to the world of law during 4th year.

Patrick and his peers learned about life on the bench by shadowing barristers and participating in talks and guided tours. The students heard from those involved in the justice system in various ways, including junior and senior counsels, legal affairs correspondents, members of An Garda Sioch谩na, a member of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and defence solicitors. They also had the opportunity to meet members of the judiciary in the Four Courts and the Criminal Courts of Justice. At the end of the week, Patrick was awarded a certificate of participation from Justice Frank Clarke, Chief Justice. Well done Patrick!

“Before Christmas, I volunteered at Kilkenny Shop wrapping gifts to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society. We had a two-hour training session where the staff taught us how to gift-wrap. We also learned about the history of the Kilkenny Shop during the training.

I volunteered on a Saturday, from 1pm to 5pm.The shop was really busy and there were long queues of customers who needed their gifts to be wrapped. The customers were all so nice 鈥 even when I was slow at wrapping! Mary the manager and all the staff at Kilkenny Shop helped me a lot during my volunteering hours. They taught me how to wrap the irregular shaped gifts and to tidy my workspace. Mary also taught me a very important lesson in customer service: 鈥淐ustomer experience is incredibly important. We must ensure that customers have the best experience, possible.” I had a memorable time volunteering at Kilkenny Shop and I learned a lot. I would definitely recommend it to others in 4th year.” – Naomi Qiu, 4th Year

“The highlight of my 4th year experience so far, was the Barista Training Course we did with Dublin Barista School. The course began on a Friday morning. A group of us from 4th year spent the whole day learning how to make multiple types of popular coffees and practicing our new skill. We also attempted to create some latte art. This was a great bonding experience. At the end of the day we invited students and teachers from the school to get a free coffee. After this, everyone who participated in the course had to complete an individual day of work experience in Dublin Barista School on Dawson Street or 9th Degree Coffee Shop on Westmorland Street. During the day of work experience, we attended the till, taking orders from customers. We also helped to make the orders towards the end of the day. Finally, everyone had to complete a series of online tests and watch explanatory videos to receive our level one certificate at the graduation ceremony at the end of the year.”听 – Kerry Browne, 4th Year
